The daily challenge law provides ensures AWS Legal’s longest-serving Partner’s commitment to the profession remains strong.

Kevin Dell, who joined the firm more than 30 years ago, has specialised solely in corporate and commercial law since the late 1980s.

He is regularly called on by the Lawlink network to draft complex legal precedents, testament to his experience and eye for detail. Those skills have also seen him become a legal figurehead in the electricity sector, including his role as a key advisor during the recent power company buy-outs.

Kevin’s expertise is sought out by the forestry industry, too, where he represents both New Zealand-based and international companies. He has also specialised in financing and securities for more than 20 years, acting for several leading southern finance companies.

For Kevin, though, it’s not all multimillion dollar deals. He continues to work with small and medium-sized businesses, ensuring they have the right legal support and frameworks in place to prosper. He advises motel businesses on sales, purchases, leases and management and also has a special interest in restructuring, trademarks and franchises.

“All of the work makes you think and there’s a challenge in all of it,” he says.

“I enjoy the variety of the work. No one job is the same as the next.”

The majority of his diverse clientele is based in Southland, where the commercial scene is both “demanding and exciting.”

Kevin’s experience has been drawn on by professional organisations, including the Southland and New Zealand law societies, where he has held several key positions.

The father of seven has served on school boards, is active in the arts and acts as Honorary Solicitor for a number of non-profit organisations.

An accomplished musician, Kevin was made an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit in 2003 for his work with brass bands and the community.
