International experience and an ear for languages have seen Darryl Gunn become an industry leader in immigration and foreign investment law.

A Senior Solicitor at AWS Legal in Queenstown, Darryl filled a gap in the legal market with his decision to focus exclusively on both immigration and Overseas Investment Office (OIO) matters.

“I seized the opportunity. There was a need for it as it was an area lacking in specialist knowledge,” he says.

With a double degree in law and the arts from Auckland University and a Master of Laws with First Class Honours (Magna Cum Laude) from Freiburg University in Germany to his credit, Darryl’s expertise was sought after by some of New Zealand’s leading law firms.

He joined AWS Legal in 2003, providing clients with a range of services relating to immigration and foreign investment, including appeals, ministerial directions, work and residency permits, and citizenship work. He also acts for several companies that employ international workers.

The constantly changing and political nature of immigration law make it essential to keep up with the play, Darryl says.

Public pressure has resulted in the OIC taking a stricter stance on foreign investors, but Darryl has extensive knowledge of the complexities involved.

“My focus is simply ensuring my clients get the best advice,” he says.

Darryl has an international network of professional connections and also regularly negotiates with the OIC, the Office of the Minister of Immigration and the New Zealand Immigration Service.

His global experience includes three years lecturing at the Basel University Law School in Switzerland before he returned to New Zealand with his wife, Jane, and two young sons, in 1996.

In his spare time, Darryl, who speaks fluent German, is a keen skier and film buff.
