Norman Elder enjoys using his legal expertise to help clients in their quest for success.

A Partner of AWS Legal, Norman has extensive knowledge in all aspects of the law, but works predominantly with the commercial sector, particularly in property, company law, business acquisitions and trusts.

“I enjoy working with the client to achieve their objective,” Norman says.

“Each deal is different; no one client or their objectives are the same, that’s why it’s interesting.”

Since joining AWS Legal in 1983, and making Partner just three years later, Norman has established a significant practice catering for clients throughout the South Island.

He travels to AWS Legal’s Christchurch office weekly, as well as working with clients in Te Anau, Queenstown and throughout Southland.

“As my clients’ business activities have increased, so has my involvement,” he says.

The firm’s Southland base was an advantage in every respect.

“Doing business from Southland gives you a lot more credibility – you become well-known and it becomes easier to do the deals that you do.”

Norman is passionate about Invercargill and, unhappy with the direction the city was taking, he was elected to the Invercargill City Council in October 1998.

“If you don’t like something, you have to stand up or shut up,” he says.

Now in his third term as a city councillor, Norman says his legal knowledge has been a valuable asset.

His commitment to the region’s economic development sees him in several key roles, including Chairman of Venture Southland, a Director of Invercargill City Holdings Ltd and Chairman of the Combined Councils’ Long-Term Community Plan Committee.

Away from work and civic duties, Norman enjoys family time, skiing, boating and relaxing in Central Otago.
