For Kasey Templer, being approachable and understanding her clients’ needs are as important as knowing the law.

A Partner of AWS Legal, Kasey specialises in family law, including separation, relationship property, custody and access, paternity, guardianship issues, adoption and Child Youth and Family applications.

Her talent also extends to employment law – drafting employment agreements, personal grievances, mediation, dispute resolution and criminal law.

A native Southlander, Kasey initially took law as an interest paper while studying toward an arts degree at Otago University. It sparked an enthusiasm for the legal world and she graduated in 2001 with a double degree in law and arts, majoring in gender and women’s studies.

From university, she joined the AWS Legal Disputes Resolution Team, where she continues to enjoy both the legal challenges and building relationships with clients.

“Litigation isn’t just about research and court work; it’s about working with people, too.

“It’s really important for me to build a rapport with the client and understand their point of view.”

She also thrives on the variety her specialty offers.

“You might be applying the same law, but each case is unique and has its own challenges.”

Co-convener of the Southland Women Lawyers’ Society, Kasey enjoys films and catching up with friends in her spare time. She’s also found a great outlet for her love of music – as ‘honorary roadie’ for her partner’s band.
