Scott is based in our Queenstown office assisting and advising clients on residential and commercial transactions, business structures, trust, asset protection and general matters. Scott also services clients in Invercargill.
Scott’s approach is to understand his client’s expectations and to act accordingly.
“I try to understand where my clients have come from and where they are trying to get to. My role is to anticipate complications and give my honest opinion about what they are trying to do, but ultimately to help then get there.”
Scott takes the role of advising clients seriously.
“A lawyer is there to give proper advice. When issues are not dealt with properly they can grow and become much bigger problems in the future. It’s much better to be up-front and honest and deal with issues properly as they arise.”
Scott regards good communication skills as the most important attribute of a lawyer.
“There’s no point using language that client’s aren’t comfortable with. Almost anything can be explained using simple words. I don’t hide behind jargon and long sentences and just talk and write in language that people understand”.
Scott takes the attitude that often clients just want a lawyer who can take care of a matter with minimal fuss and without bothering them.
“I believe that a lawyer is sometimes a necessary pain. By operating efficiently and accurately and ensuring that there are no loose ends, I minimise that pain.”
Scott’s activities outside the law include captaining the New Zealand Lawyers’ Cricket Team and walking his Border Terrier Winston.
